Penalties threaten French in the United States because of Obamacare, the new US health care system.
Of the 200,000 French living in the United States, many may soon receive a hefty fine, amounting to 2% of their annual income. Reason: they do not respect the rules of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, the new US welfare system.
This “Affordable Care Act” is the great project of Barack Obama for all the country’s citizens, including the poorest, can be protected by health insurance, much in the manner of the French Social Security. Entered into force on January 1, 2014, this device requires a person resident for tax purposes in the United States to purchase health insurance from a company “ACA compliant”, that is to say certified by the American administration.
Companies of more than 50 persons are also required to offer health insurance to their employees. In case of non-compliance with these obligations, dissuasive penalties are provided for. After a run-in period, they will start to fall. For individuals, the penalties of Obamacare are established in 2015 to 2% of gross annual income, before increasing in subsequent years. Companies must set 2000 dollars (1800 euros) per uninsured employee.
